Dark-Thaumatech Battery
Machines powered by this battery can gain some interesting traits from their deceased co-worker, the Battery of the Damned.
Full Item Description
Originally created as a path to immortality, this stone would be placed in a silver oval and worn around the neck of the one who desired to live forever. It has since been proven to only immortalize a fraction of your previous self, but another malign use has surfaced...
And now it is used by less-than-good engineers and spellcasters to fuel their many diabolical machines.
History
The ritual for the crafting of this evil amulet was first discovered by the self-proclaimed Master of Art, Chunfus. A dark magician who specialized in creating gruesome abstract art and bizarre walking horrors made of different metals and other, more organic, things. He wanted to live forever, not to terrorize, but to perfect his creations. He learned of this amulet, it was originally an formless concept known as the Oath of Immortal Sacrifice.
He utilized this Oath and, as with his art, pursued it's "perfection" to this final item. Fortunately for some, he left behind a diary of his quest. Eventually he seemed to disappear, and all that was found (and revealed) was the Dark-Thaumatech Battery.
He also left behind his diary of events leading up to his alleged demise. As it turns out, he was absorbed by the amulet and his die-hard passion to pursue something to the end lives on in the battery that is a fraction of his soul.
Magic/Cursed Properties
When in amulet form it gives the wearer a chance to resist magical effect, both good and bad, as well as bolstering their spirit to make them believe they can do anything they set their minds to.
When they die, the red stone consumes their remains and starts to pulse with inner life. It is now a Dark-Thaumatech Battery.
This is slightly more than a typical magical battery. It needs to rest for 90 minutes for every 60 it is in use, and can hold up to a 12 hour charge before having to rest for 18 hours.
The real amazing this about this battery is that it hold some of personality of the one who's soul powers it. If they had a dominant characteristic, it will be subtly evident in whatever machine they power.
While a soul is trapped in this way, the dead cannot rest and will be in constant turmoil. Unable to pass on or be raised.

He must have wished he never found this.
Interesting idea, I have read something like this before. Doesn't really scream Steampunk to me, but is a solid submission.
I must agree with Plox there: it doesn't seem to really be steampunk, save that it works as a battery for thaumatech.
As an idea, however, it combines the old and the new: it's a soul-sucking item, and it's a magical battery. A nice combination, imo.
Not bad, certainly an interesting application but would just as easily plug and play with a standard fantasy setting.
Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was very Steampunkish myself. But I plan on doing a sub about the steampunk uses for it, so I think I may redeem it.
Definite;y has more of a straight fantasy flavor, but as an item by itself it certainly has uses; use it as a power source for your golem! Just hope there's not some psychotic's soul ensnared in the gem. Otherwise you might get some crime scenes where there's no trace of the killer - just a bit of clay here or a scrap of wood there, perhaps a bit odd but certainly not suspicious.
I echo the comments so far - though it is quite nice on it's own.
