'Careful now, folks...this one is dangerous. Mind your fingers, George. That is, if you still want them.
Here we have a beast, or is he a man? We aren't too sure either, but we call him Vies.
If he hears a coin fall in his bucket, he'll eat a live chicken from that box over there in his cage. It's his favorite trick!'
Burly elongated arms, ape-like feet, hunched stance, short dark hair covering most of his body, and appearing quite feral this man is definitely more than he seems.
While entertaining a crowd he wears no more that a dirty leather loincloth. He is always disheveled, with matted muddy hair and dried blood on the edges of his mouth.
Well educated and refined, he only appears to the public as a feral brute.
In private he wears voluminous layered robes in rich dark colors and a woolen cap or a grey cloth coif (as is common garb in his homeland for sages).
In the company of friends he has a habit of rambling on about a variety of subjects from religion to the migratory habits of birds. As a matter of fact, most subjects are within the reaches of his extensive knowledge to some small degree.
His most regrettable duty is, of course, eating live chickens. As disgusting as this may sound, it is a show and he only seems to kill and eat a 'live' chicken. The secret to this illusion is kept by only himself and Mascebus Elmirion Hendamere, who guard it well.
Although his role in the The Carnival of Forgotten Souls is a bit demeaning he enjoys the attention and acceptance he receives from his peers.
As the curtain fell, Vies stood slowly. He spat out a few feathers onto the floor and reached for the door on the back of the cage.
Looking about carefully, he stepped out of the cage and sprinted over to his wagon a few yards away. Quickly entering, he closed the door behind him.
He picked up a bucket of water and stepped into a large wooden tub. He began to slowly pour the cold water over himself, scrubbing at his muddy hair the whole time. Sitting down on the edge, he scooped a handful into his mouth and began to gargle.'Great show today, my good man! You raked in quite a bit!'
Mascebus stepped through the door of the wagon, his large smile seeming a bit bigger today.
'One would hope so! I had to do the 'chicken trick' three times in a row! Why do you encourage them so Mascebus? You know I absolutely DISPISE doing that more than once a show!'the beast said after spitting out the mouthful of water into the tub.'Well, by my count, that's fifteen silvers. Ten for you' he said, handing the coins to Vies 'and four for the Carnival.'
'What about the extra coin?' he asked, climbing out of the tub and pulling on a large dark robe. 'Lining your pockets again?'
'It's for the chickens' Mascebus said coldly 'they aren't free, you know. So, are we meeting for highfeast?'
'So long as we aren't having chicken!' Vies laughed. He picked up a dusty book from the table and moved towards the door. Pulling up his hood he looked to Mascebus.
'Shall we go? I have a bit of reading to catch up on. The Life of the Laughing Owl: a species uncovered. I've been wanting to read it for weeks!'
Vies is from a far away land that holds knowledge sacred, and abhors violence in nearly any form. He left his homeland to find answers to the many questions he had that couldn't be found in the books available. Along the road he found that he was to be the target of many attacks from 'less enlightened' people. Seeking refuge, he stumbled upon the Carnival encamped in the woods for the night.
The troupers stood to the defense of the rather beastly man, and he has traveled with them ever since.
Most of his free time is spent in a corner of Ostal and Jynthen's makeshift kitchen, usually in a hooded robe, eating and reading one of the exhaustive numbers of texts he keeps in his wagon. He prefers the company of Arturo the Slight and Anati the Crocodile Woman, who share a love of the exotic and obscure almost as great as his own.
Even though he is well trained in the staff and dagger, he prefers to use his powerful arms to strike an opponent. He on occasion has moved to the rear of the melee and hurled large objects into the fray, especially when watching over Tulapon the 'Missing Link'.
GM notes: Vies is a know-it-all, and what's more is he knows it. If asked a question he will drone on until someone stops him. He has a dry sense of humor, and takes offence to derogatory remarks made of him or his friends.
He is almost always willing to lend a hand to those in need, so long as he can grab a bite to eat first. He is a connoisseur of food and wine, enjoying a new dish or vintage whenever he gets the chance.

Another likeable person.
Nice dicotamy!
Good Job!
Sweet. Is he blue?
Fits right into the carnival. My first thought was to remove him(it) from that environment thinking it would be fun. The more I read it, the more I liked the entire thing. The other submissions sold the whole idea for me.
I wasn't sure at first if I was writing him or rehashing my old Uncanny X-men collection, but no, he's not blue. But for his personality you are on the right track. The two are similar in many ways.
What Strolen said, a solid character for a carnival freakshow.
Updated: Added a bit of 'color' to him today. And no, it's not blue...
Interesting character, but one of the two expected responses - slavering beast or super intelligent beast. Not much in the way of dramatic hooks unless he is pushed way out of his comfort zone.
That is an easy thing to do.
His hooks are a bit hard to notice, but they do exist.
I'll add a few just to give a sample or two...
