The Last Zombie
In a bar not too far off the road, a man walks in. his boots clattering on the wooden floor. The bar is noticeably empty with only a few guys still around either drinking or chatting. Not too surprising since it is already the evening and they probably went home. The smell of smoke and liquor still hangs in the air like a fly caught in a web. The man in the trench coat pulls himself on a stool near the counter. His face covered by a bandanna and the brim of his hat obscuring the view of his eyes. The bartender, who had been cleaning a beer glass, looks up.
'So what'll it be, stranger?'
The man responds in a gruff and tired voice. 'Dark and Stormy.'
In a time where the zombie menace has all but been erased, one lone zombie still stands.
In the year 2076, zombie activity has risen to dangerous levels. Zombies have run a muck and were killing people by the hundreds. In an effort to kill them all, the organization known as ISO34 had made it their sworn duty to eradicate the planet of zombies. Using high-tech zombie destruction and detection devices to aid them, they had the advantage against the brain-eating undead. In a great war that spanned for over a century, they almost completed their goal. A year after their victory, however, they found a problem. With the use of one of their surveillance satellites, they saw a single zombie still standing. Clocked in bandages and a tattered tench coat, the zombie took down its surrounding enemies in droves using a dagger and a shotgun. Before reinforcements could get to the location, the zombie left. The only thing left behind were the battered and broken remains of the fallen soldiers.
ISO34 swore to find this zombie and to finish the genocide of the zombies, once and for all.
Meanwhile, the zombie has been traveling from town to town, from city to city, getting by with what he has and knows. Rumor has it that he helps defend people. Others say he kills people under the cover of night. While no way to claim these rumors to be true, there is one thing that can be certain: The undead still walks.... and it can think.
A few months have passed, ISO34 issued a large bounty upon this zombie under the title 'The Dead One.' His appearance has changed some during the time of his first sighting. He still carries the dagger and shotgun. He wears the bloodied and torn trench coat and yellow bandages. He wore leather boots as well as a fedora and bandanna to cover his face. His eyes are simple yellow orbs and his nose long gone. It also states he smells of death and salt water. He is considered very dangerous and should be avoided to prevent his zombie infection from spreading.
Rumor has it that he is making his way toward a remote city off the coast of the Atlantic ocean. City is called Wesgin. It has all what a city would ask for: Malls, shopping centers, homeless people, apartments, even Starbucks. Bounty Hunters and soldiers of ISO34 as well as other military personnel have station themselves there or are on route to the city. They have orders to shoot first, ask questions later. So now they lay in wait for the last zombie...

Update: I believe it to be a good submission now.
I wonder what gave this last zombie a mind?
Interesting idea. I like the concept. The fact that there is only one undead being left is a role reversal. Ironically, this being has cognitive thought and possibly even a personality, which I am guessing is a singular case.
I would assume there would be folks out there looking to question the creature rather than kill him. Especially any local military forces seeing his efficiency with breathing opponents.
I mainly agree with VIM, but I would like to also say that I found your writing to flow smoothly and be interesting, while still getting all the information across.
I don't get it. There is one zombie left, but he is a sentient bad-ass with a trenchcoat and a shotgun? This leaves me with lots of questions, why is is better than the average zombie? Did the other zombies use weapons and retain their intellect? Why is he different?
Writing was good, but just had questions.
That's for GMs to decide. While I might explain some of the things like the organizations or the locations, I left some parts vague for other people to play around with. Having it completely restricted path doesn't always work.
Some people might have different interpretations for the dead one. So I left it's past and abilities vague. Some might want him to be a badass killing machine, some want him to be a hero. Heck, he might not be a zombie at all. The possibilities are endless.
Very interesting. Keep up the good work.
Darkman with a bombstick,
The mysterious stranger,
-hunted by a highly trained cladestine military team,
-traveling from town,
-delivering enigmatic one-liners to bartenders
-complete badass.
This has been done and done better. The fact the people think he is the last of undead is kind of interesting, but overall no.
Little more then (good) imagery to this one.
I rather like the mysteriousness of it. The imagery is evocative.
I echo axle on this, its been done before. The potential is here for a great sub, and I realize that this was written years ago by someone who is inactive by all accounts.
I would require a lot more information for this to be good to me. Like scras says, far to many questions. Why, how, what for starters.
Why is he intelligent? Were the other zombies intelligent? If so then that would make for an interesting setting. Zombies that are as intelligent as the living is a grand setting idea.
How did the zombie apocalypse happen? Military chemical warfare? Divine anger? Mother Nature pissed off? I realize having it vague for the GM to implement their own ideas in to make it more useful and user friendly for them but give ideas of to how use this. If this zombie is unique, being the only intelligent one, how did he get that way? Has he successfully killed and eaten so many 'brains' that he has assimilated the intelligence of those he has killed and eaten? Which would be an interesting idea itself. The undead gain the memories and partial skill sets of those they kill and eat.
What is this zombie's purpose? Conflicting possibilities were given. Good guy? Bad guy? Trying to spread the zombie plague again? Trying to keep it isolated in himself and actually wiping out people who carry the gene that can pass the zombie plague and begin it again. Possibly he is seen as murdering and eating people but in fact he is creating a genocide and physically devouring the zombie virus and keeping it within himself.
