The Attatched
A fluffy, pink stuffed bear which always seems to end up in unlikely places, and which people tend to get quite attatched to...
'Dammit, Durimar, Hold on!' Cried Lenith, who was leaning over the crevice, reaching a hand out desperately to his friend.
'I... I cannot do it, my friend. Gi... Please, give my daughter my love!'
Lenith gave an audible gasp as Durimars hand lost its grasp on the rough cliff wall, and fell. Bieng a hardened warrior, the tumbling man did not scream as he fell.
The famous duo, Lenith and Durimar, had been recruited by Lord Varis a week ago, to venture into the depths of the caves of the mountain, where they were supposed to seek out and slay a demon, which had been tearing friendships apart of the townsfolk in the nearby villiage - turning friends against each other. For five days, they had searched, finding nothing but a tribe of trolls, who hunted the pair to this deep subterrainian crack. They fought bravely, and slew the trolls which had attacked them, but the last troll had managed to push Durimar off-balance, and the man had fallen into the huge cliff.
'NO!!' Shouted Lenith to his friend, and though Durimar did not scream, Lenith did, until his companion had disappeared into the gloom. After some time, Lenith arose and turned, wondering how poor Durimars daughter - Karea - would manage with neither mother OR father, now.
Give my daughter my love...
Lemith, before he left the area with the crevice, abruptly spotted a glimpse of pink, in the dark, brown surroundings. There - covered in rubble was an object... the man pulled the item out of the pile of dirt and stone - lo and behold, a stuffed teddy-bear, of all things!
But... What was a childs plaything doing all the way down here? Hmm, odd... Wait! Would this not be the perfect thing to give the daughter? It must be a sign! Maybe Durimar planted this, from beyond the grave! That MUST be it!
So, armed with a stuffed animal, Lenith left the caverns and made his way back to civilisation, to face his greatest friends young daughter.
Three days later, Lenith entered the town. He certainly looked ragged - unclean and cradling a dirty stuffed animal in his arms. His eyes darted over the townsfolk with a paranoid glare. Unfortunately, he never made it to the cottage where Durimars daughter lived: One laughing townsman, who happened to be a friend of Lenith - made his way to the adventurer, jeering at him. 'Oooh, What a great profit you've made from your adventure this time! You are one stuffed bear richer!' The townsman made a grab at the bear jokingly to play around with Lenith... and found cold steel buried in his stomach. Lenith hissed in utter fury, jerking his sword out from his former friends stomach and backing away before swinging his sword once more - decapitating him. 'DO NOT TOUCH HIM! HE IS MINE!'
The guards of the town had to step in, but Lenith, in his paranoid state, did not surrender and, unfortunately, they had to slay him. The town priests explanation of the adventurers actions was 'Madness due to grief of the loss of a friend.'
Strangely, the bear disappeared. None could find the small animal.
Magical Properties:
'The Attatched' is not a magical item. Quite simply, it is possessed by the very creature which the Duo had been sent to destroy: Heu'valis, the demon of possessions.
Any person in skin contact or very near contact (eg. the other side of clothing) will, over a period of time, get more and more attatched to the bear. The person will begin to have less respect for even his greatest friends, and will become increasingly paranoid that someone will steal this bear from them. Eventually, the sense of attatchment will become so strong that the bear is guarded with the owners life, if the bear is taken from the persons grasp, that person will either weep uncontrollably with grief, Screech gibberish and froth at the mouth, mad, or go on a homicidal spree to get their bear back. It usually takes about a weeks contact or near contact with the bear to get to this stage.
The owner will also eventually begin talking to the bear and caring for it. Also acting like it responds to comments and questions. no, this is not the demon speaking to the person, it is merely the beginnings of madness. Speaking to it usually begins after 1-2 days of possession.
There is curing for this ailment - simply to keep the person away from physical AND eye contact of the bear for as long as they were in contact WITH it. This often means having to chain the victims up for a few days, until they begin to lessen with their desire for the bear.
If, for example, someone had the bear for 7 days, then his friends removed it from him and chained him for 5 days, then let him free because he seemed fine once again, this would be fine - JUST so long as the victim doesnt see or touch the bear again for the next 2 days. If he DOES see the bear again, he would Go insane once more and try to get the bear back, by ANY means possible, even if it means killing.
The demon Heu'valis enjoys dark and dank places almost as much as he enjoys tearing peoples lives apart. As a result, once he has had his fun terrorising someone, if the bear is forgotten for a while by others, or not seen for some time, the demon will use its powers to transport the bear to a random dungeon or dank place - perhaps a treasury, or a rarely used, unlit section of a library. The demon does not age. It simply waits to be found again.

Bizarre, dark, and slightly creepy.
Who knows what those teddy bears in the store window could be thinking?
*shudders*
5/5!

One bear to bring them all and in the darkness bind them...
Nice item for a twisted horror campaign.
5/5
ephe!

From simple chats do scary things grow.
I may just have to take this plot whole cloth and stick poor Amy with it. This will make an interesting Christmas Episode as 'This years must have' all have the spirit in them.

I went ahead and gave this a 5/5 even though we all know that the teletubbies and barney already have this effect on anyone under 4. ;)
Good work. I love it.

A well-written story, and effects, and all fits together. Good item with black irony added. I'll be more careful around teddies from now.
The only thing I sort of disliked is, that it's yet another another item that makes you go mad and obessesed with its keeping. An original 'outfit' (rings are already little trusted in this regard...), but still the same thing. 4/5 because of it.

Very Lovecroftian (is that a word?)
Love it

The part I like most of all is 'DO NOT TOUCH HIM, HE IS MINE!'

Memorable, somber, morbid, and brilliant!

Interesting.

Simple, twisted, and scary once people realize the depths of the items power.
Having this item be cherished above all others by a well known rogue could easily lead to many greedy chars attempting to steal it for themselves. "If the leader of the thieves guild value it that highly it *has* to be worth a fortune!"
I am curious though if the demonic possession of the creature makes it indestructible or if it simply teleports away when damage to itself is imminent.

I'm personally not fond of the item, as others have said there are many objects that drive a person mad with desire for it. It is well presented, and its incarnation as a teddy bear adds that nice creepy feeling. I do wish it weren't pink, that just screams "I have something wrong with me and you should pay attention!" The detailing of the deamon is nice as well, and actually provides some reasoning beyond "he's an evil deamon".

Really good. Seems to me it would fit in the Garage Sale from Hell as well.
