Culbert's Wedding Band
Unfortunately for Culbert, his bride was more than he bargained for...
'Way back when, owld Culbert, ee' use teh' live up on the 'ill ee' did, an' he had some mighty strange goins' on up there, I tell yeh'. Mighty strange. Why, owld Culbert, ee' would go without gettin is' surplies down in the villij' fer' why, six or sixteen days, ee' would, I tell yeh'! An' then one day, ee' came runnen' down to ye' owld villij' sayin 'Oi got me a woif! Oi got me a woif!' Of course, we didnay believe im' cuz we all thought ee' wuz loony in the head, thas' what we thought. We never saw im' agin', until we found is' owld corpse up in the gully. Ee' ad' a regaluh' owld grin on his face, then, ee' did.'
Magical Properties:
When Culbert's Ring is put on, the user begins to see and meet new, beautiful people of the opposite sex. The wearer and new person eventually fall in love and the ring is used as a symbol for their 'wedding'. But no-one else sees the spouse, because it isn't there. Eventually, the wearer comes to a point where they love their 'spouse' so much that they never leave the illusion's side and starve to death or die of some other cause.

CaptainPenguin helped me with this item.
Thanks Capm'!
I would give it another ability that can be seen as a benefit by my players. Perhaps something simple like making them seem more beautiful to others or something subtle that will make the character keep it and wear it as a trinket.
Then start on the character when he/she is alone and start having secret rendevous with the 'future spouse.' The ring is tricky and presses the secret aspect so the other characters may become suspicious and do what they do best. Ruin a good love life and save a friend.
Great subtle side theme that can mix it up a little and keep the players guessing.
Not a bad idea, for a cruel trick to play. Of course, if you feel like being evil, it could be inflicted on an NPC, and the players could have to save the NPC... Plot hook there...
...Personally, I'd like to know where he got the ring, and how it was made.
I'd go with a lonely wizard trying to make an item to cure his loneliness. When you think about it, it worked.
Indeed it did. Too well. Woe to anyone who puts that ring on without anyone around to save them from it...
I think a perceived power that would make the wearer keep the ring on would be good food. Maybe while just wearing the ring, food tastes better, ale smoother, and so on and maybe even have some acutal healing effects, one or two hit points to go along with eating. Worse, the effect may be for everyone in the presense of the ring wearer.
Then, couple those effects with the delusions/ illusions. The new flame is quite a cook, making food that tastes like they had when they were kids, even occasionaly making thier favorites. These meals may make them feel better as well, but they are just another part of the illusion and the character isn't actually eating anything at all.
With everything tasting great and minor healing properties, the players will be hard pressed to notice anything amiss.
Being a married man, I know that a woman that can cook, and likes to, is a bonus.
Bump.
Very good idea
This one gets you thinking. I prefer the explanation of a lonely mage that wanted a wife, even if she was only an illusion...
Sweet idea, could lead to some interesting roleplaying moment when on the players has this on.
This is a great idea - and can serve as a straightforward starting adventure.
The pcs need to save someone affected by this ring without hurting him, though he likely would have no such restriction.
