Resembles an ordinary stone with a small dent at one end. About the size of a man's fist.
Magical Properties:
When you hold a canteen stone with the small dent side facing up, it begins to absorb any liquid it come into contact with (the stone does not need to be immersed for this to happen). Despite it's size it can hold up to a gallon. To retrieve the liquid from the stone, turn it so the dent faces down and squeeze the stone (the stone won't actually change shape, just squeeze it). No matter how full the stone is, it will never way more than a pound.

A cute little magic item, not flashy, but very practical. You could see a magic user of some variety making these. I give it two thumbs up.
A miniature bag of holding, holding liquids only.
Realy nice for those long travels thru the desert.... *grin*
I am not sure if I am going to use it, but I do live it very much.
I really like this item.
It's not too big, but could still be used to bash someone with. It's not made of anything too exotic or do anything to powerful, but it always of use to any character. It has plenty of possibilities that a creative DM could talior to his game.
One thing that I'd like to be cleared up though. The stone does not need to be immersed in a liquid to absorb it, just be in contact with it, so does it draw the liquid in like a vacume cleaner?
Some things DM's might consider doing could be alter how much the canteen stone can hold by a factor of what it's made out of. Ordinary rock would be the one gallon, but slate might hold two or three, marble could hold five to ten, a fist-sized chunk of quartz would carry quite a bit, precious stones would be ridiculously huge and hold a ridculious amount.
If the stones don't need to be squeezed by hand they could be used to create a running water system. Also, some interesting and creative effects could take place if they are broken, making them possible siege weapons as well.
This is an good example of how items should be. They can be more powerful or less, but those of you posting items of late should take note of this submission and use it as a benchmark.
A very good item, and very useful.
I think it does not have to be immersed _completely_.
Note, that it could absorb a liquid by chance, so its original contents could spoil... or get weird. Hmmmm... has options for the Evil DM...
I wonder if other types of stones exist that would affect things besides water. It could be useful, at least in a puzzle solving sense, to have other stones affect other elements. Maybe an air stone to hold in winds, a fire stone to hold fire, and an earth stone to hold, well, earth. How would the players react to a stone that would ooze dirt when squeezed?
This is still a great item and has many more possibilities.
If it would enter a wild-magic zone, or a similar crazy location, it could simply 'switch' its effect to other or change randomly.
PC1:'Man, how I sweat... give me the Stone for a moment!' (I hold it high up before my mouth and squeeze...)
DM: 'Lots of dirt falls into your mouth.'
PC1:'*cough* *cough* Damn, who has broken it?'
PC2:'Hey, let me handle that...'
DM :'As you squeeze it, fire burns your hand...'
Very nice little item you have got there, I like it alot.
Very practical and useful. I want to use something like it in one of my worlds.
Can't add anything to this (don't ya just hate it when that happens)
Great item - 5/5
Ditto
wow, i found a unique sub!
This may very well be *drumroll* the "best-rated-shortest-sub" (is that a category?) of all time, in the Citadel!
I too like this and think it's a diamond in the rough. It tells what needs to be able to be used and function. I of course want to know who/why/ and how personally. Who made the first ones, why, and how were they made. Other than that, I think this speaks volumes.
There might be so many, that it is not important anymore who made the first one - it is that practical to be mass produced!
Had this in my favourites, but did not vote. Changed.
Nice item!
Part of me wants to vote this lower because of length, but it's such a good, solid, usable item I can't. I'd probably give it more if some plot points were thrown in, but I can't fault its utility.
