Harmless Chinese Mythical Lifeforms
A collection of relatively harmless Chinese Mythical Lifeforms
Below is a collection of Chinese mythical life forms that are rather harmless. The author wishes to re-emphasise that that this is basically a translation and compiling exercise, not a creative one.
Each life from entry below would contain the following sections:
Physical Description
Special Properties: traits from which interactions with PCs could arise (optional depending on whether the original source details them or not)
Lore: Mythical origins/how they are incorporated into Chinese culture (optional depending on whether the original source details them or not)
Translation Quirks (optional): alternative ways of translating/interpreting particular sections and other things I want to provide notes about including particular Chinese terms, other bits about Chinese culture and potential translation inaccuracies (feel free to skip this section if uninterested).
Flora
Shadow Wood
Physical Description:
A tree distinguishable because in the day-time, each of its leaves has one hundred of the Chinese character that means 'shadow' on it while at night its flowers will shine like stars. This tree will only bear fruit every 10 000 years. Its fruits are as large as a melon, with a green skin and black seeds.
Special Properties:
Consuming the fruit of this tree will cause the body to become lighter (could also be interpreted as a bonus to speed and jumping abilities)
Lore:
Reputedly one of the fauna or flora that have taken on sentience (or at least become different in some way) from being ancient and/or having absorbed (or possibly developed on their own) a certain amount of 'essence' of nature. In Chinese, such life forms are referred to as 'Yao Jing' where Yao refers to anything and everything out of the common and Jing can be translated to 'essence'.
Translation Quirk:
At first, I thought each leave of the Shadow Wood has 100 shadows rather than having 100 Chinese characters of the word 'shadow' on it. In Chinese, usually a word is composed of at least 2 characters. For the term 'shadow', it is far more common for it to be represented by 2 Chinese characters, the first already meaning 'shadow' on its own and the second one meaning 'son' on its own but when used in combination with other characters is really more of a 'space filler'. In addition, the character that means 'son' and the character that means 'word' in Chinese are quite similar in form.

Ice Silkworm AKA Jeweled Cocoon Butterfly

The cocoon inside is alternating red , blue and yellow bands. It glints in the early spring sun, a dazzling jeweled quality. Normally found in enough quantity to spin two sets of mildly fire resistant underwear(shorts and T shirt.). The butter fly is a pretty green that will fly into fires and candles ,often snuffing them out.

This will be an ongoing project for me so more entries are forthcoming. Locked sub to maintain consistency in formats
You were right Moon -- these are a fascinating read. I preferred the flora to the fauna for some reason. Probably because the flora all had far more detailed physical descriptions. I loved the Shadow Wood and the Ivy Bloom especially.
One suggestion: I know you like to keep to the format, but I feel that the empty sections are just adding clutter to this sub. If there is nothing under Lore, Special Properties, Translation Quirks, etc, consider omitting that section entirely. I don't believe that the omission will confuse anyone, since you labeled those sections optional in the intro.
Looking forward to seeing more of these.
Actually, at one pt I did consider omitting the Special Properties and Lore section headings as well just like the Translation Quirk. But b/c I didn't label them as optional, I sort of opted for the current approach for consistency of format. But then I think you are right, omitting them wouldn't confuse anyone so I might as well get rid of empty headings.
I may not be the right person to do this, but I feel that someone should. So, on the behalf of the Community, I would just like to thank you ML, for undertaking such a big project. Even if it isn't neccesarily your own creation, I can certainly see a use for this.
PS. I thought the moon rabbit was making rice-cakes, or is that more a Japanese thing?
Yep, the Moon Rabbit and rice cakes is a Jap thing.
All quirky and interesting! So easy to just steal an idea or lifeform from this post, and expand it if need be. Really fun scroll!
This is great stuff - the difference brought by the translation and different culture gives this a wondrous feel. I really like this!
Really Outstanding! 5/5 This is the kind of thing here EXACTLY like what I am looking for, creatures w/ rp potential. Anybody can create an orc y or cthulhu y combat beast but its stuff like this that add true depth to a mature RPG, Ill repeat my comment from another of your subs-I think adding western names to the body would increase usefulness and attract a wider audience, but that's me
In case you wondered about my widely dif votes on these , I was voting on perceived usefulness on my part.Would be interested in expanding some of this one(not adding new)
Go ahead and expand any that suits your fancy, I think I told Val the same thing on a companion sub to this. You came onto the site late (or rather became active late) but before I embarked on the venture of doing this series of Chinese fabled creature subs, I actually put up a poll asking whether Strolenatis would be interested in such a 'compile and translation' exercise as I call this and all along I had the idea that this series of subs could be a gamer resource where GMs could take whatever particular creature(s) suit their fancies and adapt/expand them to their own needs.
I actually saw that you tagged this for your Stolen campaign and I was glad that you found a use for this in such a way.
Got a very nice rping encounter out of the ice cocoon thingy at last nights game
Glad to hear.
Gotta love Chinese lore! The 'mice' are subjective interpretations of mammoths/musk-oxen lol Fish that turn into birds, sea rhinos, icy cocoons, time panthers, and the Bo Yi is just...weird. :)
Speaking of weird, what else do we know about the Huan aside from no mouth and impossible to kill?
I ran another Google search on Huan and the only other info. abt this creature are that:1) it always wears an arrogant expression, by which I assume it always holds its head unnecessarily high; 2) apparently it doesn't need to eat or drink and can still live.
Need more of these!!!!!!!!!
Came back to to mine more stuff, need more of these!!!!!!
From reading online novels, apparently all I have to do is get my hands on a copy of the ancient Chinese text available in every physical book shop in China (but I don't know whether that's true, it's a novel after all). Now that my bank card is automatically updated to become a visa debit, I can finally shop online at will but I need to find the right place to get a copy.
heres hoping!
This is extremely well done.
I haven't seen posts like this before - that cover the `normal' flora and fauna that give an environment quality and feel. The detail and simplicity is astounding. It abounds with role-playing opportunities!
This is neat. I like the translation notes.
.....long past time for a SEQUEL!!!!!!!! HINT!
I did browse through 1/4 of that Chinese text I talked about in one go but finding it very hard to keep track which worthy of translation and which not (some too brief and overlapping with what I put up already)- from memory, only about 2 I found potentially promising but by the end I forgot which 2 already. Maybe I should just translate the whole thing into English and then dig through it, I been thinking about releasing another Chinese sub to be honest a while back though that would be a NPC/lore sub rather than more creatures. Thinking to get more active writing wise though (currently planning a novel series and pretty slow going) so just might get to this but no promises.
Update:
Added new entries, will be slowly but steadily doing so over the this month to this scroll and the other companions scrolls.
Update:
Fully updated.
