Full Item Description
The Ghorish Maw is used by the Ogre Tribes which live in the Ghor Mountains, named after a legendary Ogre Chieftain who once resided there. Known for his love of eating, these are the weapons he armed his warriors with.
The Maw is effectively a combination of a pair of scissors and a beartrap (the ones with teeth.) The wielder holds it by the handle, with his arms crossed. Bringing his hands together slams the weapon shut, opening the distance between his hands opens the weapon again. While open. the weapon is large and solid enough to make an unwieldy shield. When slammed shut, the weapon does a small amount of damage. However, as the weapon does almost 100% of its damage via the slam of the weapon, it ignores supple armor, and has a decent chance of breaking armor which isn't supple.

Now this I like. I can imagine an army armed with these things, enough to scare all but the most fearless troops in the opposing army.
While it looks to be an impressive and scary weapon. I don't quite get how it would physically work on combat.
It seems to unwieldy and difficult to use, easily defended against, and a bit complicated to produce for all the moving parts.
In effect once a warrior picks this weapon up they are committed to using it. Both hands are now occupied and can not be used for anything else.
Like I said, scare factor 101 wins the prize, but actual functionality. I can't see it.
I have to agree with Mourn, it seems more like an anime/ computer game weapon... cool graphic with effectivness embedded into the program, rather than reality.
And who is making these for the Ogres? Given the description, this weapon is huge, unwieldy, and beyond the ability of someone pre 18th century to make.
Maybe these are just carried in the front rank of the Ogre army, to try and scare the heck out of people? If they don't flee, the swordsmen and axemen take over.
Well, I agree it sounds very unwieldly.. but then again ogres are strong. Plus, have you ever seen a real human claymore? Talk about unwieldly.... some of those things are bigger than I am, and I'm more ogre then elf or dwarf.
Plus, ogres are often not known for their wits.
Well, make these things magically animated instead by spirits of ogrish hunger - mauls with metal maws on them that not only crush but bite chunks out of your armor, clothes, you.
I don't see anything really wrong with this, a lot people critique things as 'unrealistic' because they think it won't be as effective as another weapon or concept. These sort of argument ignore that technology is both human and aligned over time. Yeah this may be a crappy weapon, and its use may be a poor tactic, but that doesn't mean it would n't be used. Rather all it means is that the forces of natural selection that drive warfare and invention would eventually phase this out. I also don't think it would be over complicated for fantasy race to make large metal hinge with handles.
It sounds like a gladiator weapon for the arena.
I tend to agree that it doesn't seem very useful to me. And while I agree with Axlerowes that all kinds of weapons got tried, the ones that didn't work well got dropped quickly, either because the fighters went to something different, or they all got killed. I agree with Cheka Man that it would have some scare value, I can imagine a few ogre champions with these, backed up by lots with more normal weapons. And it wouldn't be too complicated to be made by a fantasy race.
