Book of Cain

Ancient beyond measure, the Book of Cain is the black bible of the Vampires. Supposedly penned by the legendary First Vampire, Cain, in the blood of the demon-god Melmnohch, this book has been mass produced by the vampires. It supposedly tells the tale of Cain, his casting from the Valley of Man by the 'Gods of the Cursed Sun' as they are called, and the birth of the vampires. It is believed that almost every vampire owns a copy of this book. An excerpt:
'Be wary, Blood of my Blood;
Shun the sharp thing that
wouldst peirce thy heart;
Shun the Cursed Sun that
wouldst burn they flesh;
Partakest thou not of the
water that runs, nor shalt
thou partakest of the water
that is blessed of the Gods
of the Cursed Sun'
Bound in humanskin leather, it's pages have been soaked in blood so that the vellum is a pinkish color. The red verses are written in sinister tongue of the Underworld. The book also contains the horrific secrets of the Dark Gifts, the inherited magical gifts that are passed between generations of vampires.
Magical Properties:
The Book of Cain, if opened by a non-vampire, strikes the opener down with a curse. Every night, the victim cuts theirself in their sleep over the pages of the book. This occurs until the victim is drained of blood and becomes a zombie.

I would take it that any blood lost would not be regenerated, or perhaps the wounds do not heal and they constantly bleed.
I would make only certain passages readable by the non-vampire, everything else a jumbled mess. Just enough to keep the victims interest in it and instead of it happening at night...probably make it just happen whenever they read the book after nightfall or something.
Maybe the book can't even be read by direct light, has to be the light of the moon or something.
ok i think the blood thirsty book is a good idea but ,what happens to the blood of the victim? is the book alive or soemthing or is like a vampire creature?

The instructional part is good, in that it could help keep the interest of the reader. It could go inform the characters about the powers possesed by a vampire, and their history, and it also could teach an incantation that is suppose to make the character impervious to a vampire.
The spell would consist of pouring the one's own blood upon the book to ensure dominance over vampires. When completed with the spell, though, the character would mentally conform to a zombie-like state where he appeared, and physically remained the same, but he would now be under the command of the vampire that wrote the book. He would have no sense of humor, nor plans to invite nor keep anyone close in his personal life.
This would be a way that a vampire enlisted minions to carryout such menial tasks as transporting his casket, finding a safe haven, and providing protection as he slept. All this without actually having to search them out.

Seriously, it actually sounds intriguing. Question about the cutting the wrist part. Does it happen all in one night? For instance, a non-vampire opens it and befalls the curse and must then slake the books thirst with their blood by cutting their wrist. Now does it drain them completely that night? Or does this happen over a peiod of a few days. And if so, do they have an recollection of cutting their wrist? Wounds open, closed, heal over night?

But the blood-writing, I would figure yes, because its a ritual thing.

I like the idea of the Vampiric bible. Certainly has a place in such campaigns.
