A man that needs a drink
Bold Adventurers the Fountain of Youth awaits your lips....
Background:
This tale is only a rumor that a drunken man has spread in bars and it slowly became widespread. He tells this tale because one day he was walking to the bar and a note from an adventurer named Kaelin was swept up by the wind and hit him in the face.
The note reads:
This note is a document of what I have found in a mountanous region around the Sea of Serpents. I was adveturing for the Fountain of Youth said to be hidden along the coast. I was tipped off by an agent of the king of my land. It was said to be false but my personality would not allow that concept unless I found it. I have passed by a valley that is hidden (then it continues on the back of the paper) in a deep fog and almost completly surrounded by mountains. I will venture through the fog may my faith keep me safe. (then the writing begins to fade slowly) I have found the city containing the Fountain of Youth. Although I have found it there seems to be monks here that are of holy religion but seem eerie to me.
(then in very small writing at the bottom right corner it says)
KAELIN LASUM
BRAVE ADVENTURER
The drunken man ran into the bar and told everyone that if they buy him a drink he will tell them of the tale of the Fountain of Youth and show proof. Most didn't believe the man at first but soon enough a young lad bought him a drink. The drunken man kept his promise and showed the lad the note and told the tale as if he went with Kaelin himself. The young boy could barely sit next to the man and listen due to the excessive stentch of his breath and underarms. The boy however did not leave and barely cared for the tale intrigued him to venture for the Fountain of Youth. The boy told everybody, and the man has been in the same bar for 3 years drinking away and starting bar fights with any man that attempts to steal the note from him.
There have been many concepts to this and many rumors of the city they call The City of Venerability which contains the Fountain of Youth.
Possible Scenarios:
~Your PCs walk into the local bar of a city and find the man telling the tale of the Fountain of Youth. They possibly overhear him and want to hear it themselves. They could kill him for it, steal it, or simply buy him a shot of whiskey.
~They hear a person in a city telling the tale of the drunken man and his rumors that he spread about the City of Venerability.
A great way to throw your PCs into a twist or sidetrack them into a side quest or even give them something to look for and they could possibly never find. They could also find it and find out the real reason why nobody returns.
Look at inset below for explaination of theories about the city.

An interesting sidetrack, but there is not much detail. Is the City of Venerability really the site of the Fountain of Youth, or what?
3/5.
Well nobody really knows and that is what the PC's should be hopefully intrigued to wonder and try to find out by venturing there and finding out the cold hard truth themselves. It is believed to be the site of the Fountain of Youth but it is all rumor that could be true. That is where the plot sets in for the PC's to go about and find out the truth along the path of the directions that aren't so clear.
It is kinda like the needle and a haystack story. But you could choose to let them find it or just piss them off and get them side-tracked so they go back to the place the were told of the rumor and slit the sorry bastard's throat that told them it. LOL

The core idea of a plot that largely serves to confuse players is okay but I think the bit abt the drunken staying in the same bar for 3 years and starting a barfight with anyone attempting to steal the note from him a bit of a logical flaw as it implies that somehow he has the note very securely kept around his person OR he's somehow the best fighter in terms of a bar-fight which I find hard to believe.
